National Heroes’ Day

Celebrated as early as 1931, the holiday honors and remembers all Philippine national heroes, particularly those who don’t have their own special holidays or observances. This regular national holiday is celebrated on the last Monday in August. It is known in the Philippines as “Araw ng mga Bayani.” It is a day to commemorate Philippines national heroes.

Despite its lofty title, the holiday does not only commemorate prominent figures in Philippine History, but also honors unknown Filipinos, past and present, who have given much to the cause of freedom, justice, and Philippine independence and nationhood.

The following list of key National Heroes who should be honored for their contribution to the Philippines.

Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, Apolinario Mabini, Melchora Aquino, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Sultan Kudarat and Juan Luna.

Two of these heroes, Andres Bonifacio and Jose Rizal were key figures in the fight for independence from Spain that they also have specific national holidays in their honour.

The modern day Filipino heroes who inspired and honored in every Filipinos are:

The Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), Teachers, Police and even the Armies.
